Iglesia ni Cristo’s Eraño Manalo dies at 84
by Howie G. Severino, GMANews.TV
Eraño Manalo, the head of the politically influential, vernacular-speaking, and home-grown Iglesia ni Cristo, passed away Monday afternoon, an INC official said.
In a recorded announcement aired on dzBB radio, INC spokesperson Bienvenido Santiago confirmed Manalo’s death at 3:53 p.m. Monday, August 31, 2009. Manalo was officially the Executive Minister of the INC, but he was also its supreme, charismatic leader who took over the church upon the death in 1963 of the founder, his father Felix Manalo.
“Ikinalulungkot naming ipabatid sa buong Iglesia at sa buong sambayanan na ang tagapamahalang pangkalahatan ng Iglesia ni Cristo, ang kapatid na Eraño G. Manalo ay pinagpahinga na ng Diyos. Pumanaw siya sa kanyang tahanan sa ganap na 3:53 kahapon Agosto 31, 2009, sa gulang na 84 taon,” Santiago said.
(We are sad to announce to the Iglesia and to the whole nation that the Executive Minister of Iglesia ni Cristo, our brother Eraño G. Manalo, joined our Creator. He passed away at his home 3:53 p.m. on August 31, 2009. He was 84 years old.)
Santiago said that according to Dr. Ray Melchor Santos, Manalo died due to cardiopulmonary arrest.
According to Santiago, Manalo’s remains will lie in state at INC’s Central Temple in Quezon City. Further details will be announced, Santiago added.
Manalo was born on Jan. 2, 1925. He is Felix Manalo’s fifth child.
Manalo’s flock and influence
Manalo had guided his religious group through a long period of national and global expansion, and in the last decade had thrown his church’s clout behind former president Joseph Estrada. The PCIJ has described the INC as “a secretive, tightly organized church composed mainly of poor members.”
No one knows its exact membership, which has been estimated at between two and eight million members concentrated in Tagalog-speaking regions of Luzon. But its churches are reportedly located in over 60 countries.
The INC’s influence on state affairs can be traced back to its founding in 1914, when Manuel L. Quezon, Commonwealth president and a mason, cultivated the then-obscure church as a foil to the Roman Catholic church. Its sway reached a new peak during the regime of Ferdinand Marcos, who rarely failed to attend important INC events, including “Ka Erdie” Manalo’s birthday, and gave an INC-affiliated company major Land Transportation Office contracts.
It is widely known that the INC’s power lies in the tagubilin emanating from Manalo and other church leaders, orders that cannot be disputed by members and can be used to command voting blocs around the country.
While Manalo often used his power to support certain candidates in the past -- aside from Marcos and Estrada, he also backed Eduardo Cojuangco in 1992 -- he famously wielded his clout during the EDSA Tres demonstrations that reached the gates of Malacañang, an early and arguably still the most serious threat the Arroyo administration has faced. Three out of four of the demonstrators were reportedly INC members.
But President Arroyo eventually won Manalo to her side. When she ran in 2004, the Iglesia ni Cristo threw its support behind her.
With Manalo now dead, it remains to be seen how the church will use its influence in the coming elections. But if history is any indication, the INC will certainly play a role.
Arroyo, Estrada mourn
On Tuesday, Malacañang, through deputy presidential spokesperson Anthony Golez Jr., extended its sympathies to Manalo’s family and to the INC community.
“Nakikiramay po ang First Family at administrasyon sa pagpanaw ni Ka Erdie Manalo. He has been very instrumental sa simbahan, sa pagiging charismatic at pag-unite ng mga tagapagsunod. At nakikriamay po kaming lubos sa pamilya,” Golez told dzBB radio in an interview.
(The First Family and the administration condole with Ka Erdie Manalo’s family. He has been very instrumental in the church, in his being charismatic, and in uniting his followers.)
Estrada also expressed his sadness over Manalo’s death.
“President Estrada joins the nation in mourning the loss of one of the nations’ greatest religious leaders,” Estrada’s spokesperson Margaux Salcedo told GMANews.TV in a phone interview.
In February 2006, while Estrada was facing trial for plunder, presidential chief of staff Mike Defensor disclosed that three religious leaders, including Manalo, had expressed willingness to serve as Estrada’s guarantors if he applies for his release on recognizance.
Estrada was later convicted of plunder in September 2007, but President Arroyo granted him executive clemency a month later.
Religious leaders sympathize
Meanwhile, other religious groups also extended their sympathies to those left behind by Manalo.
Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz said that despite differences in their religious views, Manalo was a good man.
“Masasabi natin na mabuting tao po yan, bagaman, magkaiba kami ng pananampalataya (I can say that he is a good man even if we differ in religious beliefs),” Cruz said in an interview on dzBB.
Another religious leader, Bro. Eddie Villanueva of the Jesus Is Lord Movement, also expressed sadness.
“Ang aming buong pamilya at Jesus is Lord (members) worldwide ay buong pusong nakikiramay at nakikidalamhati sa pamilya ni Ka Erdie at sa ating kaibigan sa INC. Nawa’y maramdaman ng pamilya ni Ka Erdie at lahat ng INC ang kapayapaan ng ating buhay na Diyos,” Villanueva said.
(My family and the Jesus is Lord worldwide wholeheartedly extends our condolences to Ka Erdie’s family and our friends at the INC. I hope they feel the Lord’s peace.) -- With reports from Sophia Dedace and Joseph Holandes Ubalde, GMANews.TV

Stefania Fernandez – Miss Universe 2009
By DANICA COTO
NASSAU, Bahamas – Miss Venezuela was the fairest of them all once again, winning the 2009 Miss Universe crown for the second year straight and the sixth time since the pageant’s creation.
Dressed in a flowing red gown, 18-year-old Stefania Fernandez hugged the runner-up from the Dominican Republic and danced in joy as her victory was announced Sunday.
The crown briefly fell to the floor as it passed from one Venezuelan beauty to the next.
But Fernandez said there was time for outgoing Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza to whisper in her ear that she must have worked hard for Venezuela to win consecutive crowns.
“What do we Venezuelans have?” Fernandez, an international relations student, told reporters after the pageant. “That we are ourselves.”
The other top-five finalists were runner-up Ada Aimee de la Cruz, followed by Miss Kosovo, Droga Ganusha; Miss Australia, Rachael Finch; and Miss Puerto Rico, Mayra Matos Perez.
During a question-and-answer segment with the five top finalists, Fernandez said she believed women have overcome obstacles such as hitting the proverbial glass ceiling.
“I feel we have reached the level that men are at,” she said.
When asked later how she thought beauty contests promoted equality between men and women, Fernandez said they provided exposure.
“We have quite a following worldwide,” she said. “We are models to follow.”
The new Miss Universe is from the city of Merida in the west of a beauty-obsessed South American country where hard-fought pageants are something of a national sport, with contestants widely dissected by the public and the media.
Fernandez said she did not know whether Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez would receive her. He did not meet with Mendoza when she won and made no public statements at the time.
But Fernandez said he might change his mind.
“We’ll see, because we are making history,” she said.
The top 15 Miss Universe finalists appeared in bathing suits before the final 10 were chosen for the evening gown segment.
Pageant co-owner Donald Trump told reporters, “I think this is the most beautiful group of women I’ve ever seen.”
The televised event included musical performances by Flo Rida, Heidi Montag, David Guetta and Kelly Rowland.
Montag gave her first live performance, singing “Body Language” from her debut album.
Fans cheered on the blond star of MTV’s “The Hills,” although NBC, which broadcast the event in the Bahamas live, blocked out more than half of her performance as they introduced the 15 finalists.
“It’s my first performance live and it’s in front of a billion eyes,” Montag said.
The on-stage hosts were Billy Bush, co-anchor of “Access Hollywood,” and Claudia Jordan, a former Miss Rhode Island USA who has appeared on several TV shows. Judges included actor Dean Cain and supermodel Valeria Mazza.
Miss China, Wang Jingyao, was named Miss Congeniality and Miss Thailand, Chutima Durongdej, won Miss Photogenic.
Many contestants have suffered from dehydration in recent weeks, and Jewel Selver, Miss Turks and Caicos, went home Saturday to recuperate, said Esther Swan, Miss Universe spokeswoman.

Ninoy’s alleged ‘Undelivered speech’
Today, we commemorate the martyrdom of Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.

Former Philippine President Corazon Aquino, left, and her assassinated husband Benigno 'Ninoy' Aquino Jr. look on during his rebellion trial before a military commission. (AP Photo/File)
Because 26 years ago, he chose to leave his peaceful life in America to return to his homeland, despite threats to his life.
He was supposed to deliver a speech upon his return but was unable to do so when he was killed on the tarmac of the then Manila International Airport.
His death sparked the Philippines’ shining moment in history, as millions of Filipinos joined his funeral march amid fear during former president Ferdinand Marcos’ dictatorship. Three years later, Aquino’s widow, Corazon, was catapulted to power through the world’s first bloodless, people-led revolt now known as the People Power/ EDSA Revolution.
Although several members of the military were convicted and have served several years in prison for supposedly killing Ninoy Aquino, the question remains: who was the mastermind?
What follows is dubbed as ‘The most famous undelivered speech in Philippine history,’ the alleged speech Ninoy was supposed to read before his supporters.
————————————————————————————————————————-
(This is the entire statement as it appears (all-caps, italicized quote, and all) in “A Testimony by Ninoy,” a pamphlet published on September 1, 1983 by the Human Development Research and Documentation office of the La Ignaciana Apostolic Center as Human Society No. 21)
I have returned on my free will to join the ranks of those struggling to restore our rights and freedoms through nonviolence.
I seek no confrontation. I only pray and will strive for a genuine national reconciliation founded on justice.
I am prepared for the worst, and have decided against the advice of my mother, my spiritual adviser, many of my tested friends and a few of my most valued political mentors.
A death sentence awaits me. Two more subversion charges, both calling for death penalties, have been filed since I left three years ago and are now pending with the courts.
I could have opted to seek political asylum in America, but I feel it is my duty, as it is the duty of every Filipino, to suffer with his people especially in time of crisis.
I never sought nor have I been given assurances or promise of leniency by the regime. I return voluntarily armed only with a clear conscience and fortified in the faith that in the end justice will emerge triumphant.
According to Gandhi, the WILLING sacrifice of the innocent is the most powerful answer to insolent tyranny that has yet been conceived by God and man.
Three years ago when I left for an emergency heart bypass operation, I hoped and prayed that the rights and freedoms of our people would soon be restored, that living conditions would improve and that blood-letting would stop.
Rather than move forward, we have moved backward. The killings have increased, the economy has taken a turn for the worse and the human rights situation has deteriorated.
During the martial law period, the Supreme Court heard petitions for Habeas Corpus. It is most ironic, after martial law has allegedly been lifted, that the Supreme Court last April ruled it can no longer entertain petitions for Habeas Corpus for persons detained under a Presidential Commitment Order, which covers all so-called national security cases and which under present circumstances can cover almost anything.
The country is far advanced in her times of trouble. Economic, social and political problems bedevil the Filipino. These problems may be surmounted if we are united. But we can be united only if all the rights and freedoms enjoyed before September 21, 1972 are fully restored.
The Filipino asks for nothing more, but will surely accept nothing less, than all the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the 1935 Constitution — the most sacred legacies from the Founding Fathers.
Yes, the Filipino is patient, but there is a limit to his patience. Must we wait until that patience snaps?
The nation-wide rebellion is escalating and threatens to explode into a bloody revolution. There is a growing cadre of young Filipinos who have finally come to realize that freedom is never granted, it is taken. Must we relive the agonies and the blood-letting of the past that brought forth our Republic or can we sit down as brothers and sisters and discuss our differences with reason and goodwill?
I have often wondered how many disputes could have been settled easily had the disputants only dared to define their terms.
So as to leave no room for misunderstanding, I shall define my terms:
1. Six years ago, I was sentenced to die before a firing squad by a Military Tribunal whose jurisdiction I steadfastly refused to recognize. It is now time for the regime to decide. Order my IMMEDIATE EXECUTION OR SET ME FREE.
I was sentenced to die for allegedly being the leading communist leader. I am not a communist, never was and never will be.
2. National reconciliation and unity can be achieved but only with justice, including justice for our Muslim and Ifugao brothers. There can be no deal with a Dictator. No compromise with Dictatorship.
3. In a revolution there can really be no victors, only victims. We do not have to destroy in order to build.
4. Subversion stems from economic, social and political causes and will not be solved by purely military solutions; it can be curbed not with ever increasing repression but with a more equitable distribution of wealth, more democracy and more freedom, and
5. For the economy to get going once again, the workingman must be given his just and rightful share of his labor, and to the owners and managers must be restored the hope where there is so much uncertainty if not despair.
On one of the long corridors of Harvard University are carved in granite the words of Archibald Macleish:
“How shall freedom be defended? By arms when it is attacked by arms; by truth when it is attacked by lies; by democratic faith when it is attacked by authoritarian dogma. Always, and in the final act, by determination and faith.”
I return from exile and to an uncertain future with only determination and faith to offer — faith in our people and faith in God.

Job hunting? Take those wild party pics off Facebook
WASHINGTON (AFP) – – Nearly half of US employers research the online profiles of job candidates on social networks such as Facebook, MySpace or LinkedIn, according to a new survey.
Forty-five percent of the employers surveyed for CareerBuilder.com, the largest US online job site, said they use social networking sites to check on job candidates, up from just 22 percent in a survey conducted last year.
Another 11 percent said they plan to start using social networking sites for screening.
“As social networking grows increasingly pervasive, more employers are utilizing these sites to screen potential employees,” CareerBuilder said in a statement.
It said job seekers should “be mindful of the information they post online.”
CareerBuilder said that of those who conduct online searches as background checks on job candidates, 29 percent use Facebook, 26 percent use LinkedIn and 21 percent use MySpace.
Eleven percent search blogs while seven percent follow candidates on micro-blogging service Twitter.
Thirty-five percent of those surveyed said they have found content on a social network that caused them not to hire a candidate, CareerBuilder said.
Examples included “provocative or inappropriate photographs or information” or content about drinking or using drugs.
Other reasons cited were badmouthing a previous employer, co-workers or clients, poor communication skills, making discriminatory comments, lying about qualifications or sharing confidential information from a previous employer.
Information found on social networking profiles was not always a negative factor in finding a job.
Eighteen percent of employers said they have found content on social networking sites that caused them to hire the candidate, CareerBuilder said.
Some profiles “provided a good feel for the candidates personality” or supported their professional qualifications while others demonstrated creativity or solid communication skills.
Rosemary Haefner, vice president of human resources at CareerBuilder, recommended that candidates “clean up digital dirt” before beginning a job search by removing photos, content and links which could hurt their chances.
The survey of 2,667 hiring managers and human resource professionals was conducted by Harris Interactive between May 22 and June 10. It has a sampling error of plus or minus 1.9 percentage points.

MARIAN AS LEADING LADY.
Little sister na makulit.”
Between showbiz and politics, ano ang mas malapit sa puso niya?
“Sa akin, ang nasa puso ko talaga, e, tumulong sa mga tao,” sagot ni Manny.
Magsisimula nang mapanood ang Show Me Da Manny sa August 23.

Philippine leader cancels presidential jet order
MANILA (AFP) – – Philippine leader Gloria Arroyo has cancelled an order for a presidential jet amid public outrage over her alleged extravagant lifestyle during a financial crisis, her spokesman said Sunday.
The make and price of the aircraft were not disclosed but her spokesman, Cerge Remonde, said Arroyo “does not want more criticism about her spending.”
“I am formally announcing the president has ordered the cancellation of the purchase of a presidential jet,” Remonde said.
Arroyo came under intense criticism after the New York Post reported this week that she and her officials ran up a 20,000-dollar (almost one million pesos) tab for dinner at a restaurant while on an official visit to the US.
The report triggered public condemnation and street protests in the Philippines, where, according to official data, about one third of the country’s 90 million population lives on one dollar or less a day.
The presidential palace denied public funds had been spent on the dinner at the Le Cirque restaurant last month, saying that a rich Filipino architect whose brother is a political ally of Arroyo had paid the bill.
Remonde said Sunday the purchase of the jet had been cancelled even though this “would have benefited the next presidents.”
He said Arroyo’s office was also preparing a report for Congress on expenses incurred during her trip to the US, where she became the first Southeast Asian leader to meet President Barack Obama.
Arroyo was swept to power in 2001 after a military-backed popular revolt ousted her corruption-tainted predecessor, Joseph Estrada.
She served Estrada’s remaining term in office and in 2004 won a highly contested second term amid allegations of cheating.
Her popularity has continued to drop since 2004, with her family accused of using the presidential office to enrich themselves.

Report: Arroyo entourage also had $15,000 meal in D.C.
MANILA – Three days before allegedly spending $20,000 for a dinner in a Manhattan restaurant, President Arroyo and her entourage also reportedly spent another $15,000 for dinner at Bobby Van’s Steakhouse on 15th Street, Washington DC, a major US daily reported Wednesday.
A report titled “Heartburn Over Two Big Meals” in the Washington Post’s Reliable Source column said Mrs. Arroyo and an entourage of about 65 people, including security and food tasters, had dinner at Bobby Van’s Steakhouse on 15th Street NW hours after her July 30 meeting with US President Barack Obama. ”
The group took over one of the restaurant’s private rooms and dined on lobster, steak and fine wines; at the conclusion of the meal, an unidentified woman opened a handbag stuffed with cash, counted out bills and paid the $15,000 tab — which included a generous tip,” the column read. “The Philippine Embassy did not return calls for comment Tuesday,” it added.
The bill of $15,000 roughly translates to about P720,899,000 based on latest foreign exchange rates. Steaks at the popular restaurant are priced anywhere from $38 (P1,830) to $42 (P2,023), according to the Bobby Van’s Steakhouse website.
Half bottles of red and white wine at the restaurant are priced between $18 (P867) to $60 (P2,890) while the most expensive bottle on the winelist, a Louis Roederer Cristal Reims, is priced at $575 (P27,697). Arroyo’s expensive dinner in Washington is the second to be reported by the US media recently.
Last week, the New York Post reported that Arroyo and her entourage dined at Manhattan’s Le Cirque on August 2, with the dinner bill amounting to $20,000 or almost P1 million. Malacañang spokesmen have denied that public funds were used to pay for the dinner. They said it was Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez who paid the bill. Romualdez is the nephew of former First Lady Imelda Marcos.
Akbayan party-list Rep. Walden Bello on Wednesday urged the Office of the Ombudsman to investigate President Arroyo for violating Republic Act 6713 or the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.
Bello cited Section 4(h) of the law which states that “public officials shall lead modest lives appropriate to their positions and income,” and that “they shall not engage in extravagant or ostentatious displays of wealth.” He added that if Romualdez paid for the dinner, then both Arroyo and Romualdez could be charged with bribery.
