MANILA (AFP) – – Philippine leader Gloria Arroyo has cancelled an order for a presidential jet amid public outrage over her alleged extravagant lifestyle during a financial crisis, her spokesman said Sunday.

The make and price of the aircraft were not disclosed but her spokesman, Cerge Remonde, said Arroyo “does not want more criticism about her spending.”

“I am formally announcing the president has ordered the cancellation of the purchase of a presidential jet,” Remonde said.

Arroyo came under intense criticism after the New York Post reported this week that she and her officials ran up a 20,000-dollar (almost one million pesos) tab for dinner at a restaurant while on an official visit to the US.

The report triggered public condemnation and street protests in the Philippines, where, according to official data, about one third of the country’s 90 million population lives on

The group took over one of the restaurant’s private rooms and dined on lobster, steak and fine wines; at the conclusion of the meal, an unidentified woman opened a handbag stuffed with cash, counted out bills and paid the $15,000 tab — which included a generous tip,”

MANILA — Former president Corazon “Cory” Aquino was laid to rest Wednesday with full military honors in a simple tomb next to her assassinated husband, after an eight-hour funeral procession joined by hundreds of thousands of supporters who hailed her as an exemplar of moral leadership.

The Aquino family rejected offers by Arroyo for a state funeral, but the Armed Forces gave full military honors.

Shortly before reaching the mausoleum where she will be laid to rest, pallbearers stopped as military honor guards executed a 21-gun salute. Her coffin was transferred afterwards to a waiting caisson bedecked with flowers that was pulled by a military jeep towards her tomb.

About 600 priests and nuns linked arms around the Aquino mausoleum at the Manila Memorial Park to keep back the crowd who followed the flatbed truck with her flag-draped coffin on its

MANILA, Philippines – President Arroyo can visit the wake of former President Corazon Aquino if she wants, but the Aquino children have made it known that they are not looking forward to it.

Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III and television host Kris Aquino-Yap said they were not keen on seeing Mrs. Arroyo at their mother’s wake or funeral which is set on Wednesday.

President Arroyo cut short her US trip reportedly to attend the necrological services for Mrs. Aquino.

But Noynoy said the family would respect President Arroyo’s decision to go to his mother’s wake.

He said that in their younger years, his parents taught him and his siblings to be polite and respectful to elders.

Just like Ninoy's funeral in August 1983

MANILA -- An estimated crowd of 17,000 lined the whole length of Ayala Avenue in Makati City and thousands more viewed the funeral convoy of former President Corazon Aquino as she was brought to Manila Cathedral from La Salle Green Hills on Monday.

In scenes reminiscent of the 1986 People Power revolution that catapulted Aquino to the presidency, Makati employees threw confetti out of their office windows while the electronic ticker outside the Insular Life Building on Paseo de Roxas-Ayala Avenue flashed pictures of Aquino and the words “Paalam, Cory.”

Footage taken by ABS-CBN’s Sky Patrol showed the crowds flashing the “L” for Laban sign, which was popularized during Aquino’s presidential campaign in 1986. Others clapped and cheered as Aquino’s funeral convoy pulled in close
